FAQ
Q.
Do you only teach kids?
No,
lessons are available to people
of all ages and experiences.
Q. I already have experience in singing.
What can you offer me?
Anne has
in-depth knowledge and
understanding of vocal function. She can help you to troubleshoot
difficult areas, teaching techniques which can help you to sing more
easily/efficiently. This leaves you free to express your song
confidently. Anne is
happy to help you to develop in your chosen style/genre or explore new
vocal qualities. Lessons will be planned to suit your particular
needs/interests. A lot of hard work is done, but there is often
laughter as well!
Q.
I'm an adult beginner. Is singing tuition right
for me?
This can
depend
on a number of things, including your own natural abilities, your
personality, your experience and whether or not you are ready for
formal training. Anne is keen to help you to
develop your vocal abilities and, in a consultation, will advise you
honestly how best to proceed. She is particularly aware that beginners
may not feel very confident and if you do begin lessons you will
be taught with patience and encouragement.
Q. What are the fees?/How much does it cost?
Fees are
set
according to ISM guidelines. They depend on the level of work
being
taught and whether study will be long or
short term. The initial 1/2 hour consultation
is charged at £15.00.
Anne will
then advise you of the level of fees if subsequently a course of
lessons is aranged.
Q. At what times can I book a lesson, and
how long will it last?
Lessons may be booked between 10.00am
and 7.30pm Monday to Friday. At
present appointments between 4.00pm and 7.30pm are
assigned to students who have a regular fortnightly lesson place. There
is
greater flexibility during the day and lessons may be booked by
individual appointment.
Lessons may be half an hour or an hour long, depending on age and
experience (and time availability). Most people start with half an
hour. Forty minute lessons are occasionally booked and charged pro-rata.
Q. What happens during a lesson?
In general most lessons will start with a warm-up followed
by technical work. There will then be time to apply the techniques
while working on songs. Each lesson is individually planned
according to a student's needs, so the exact content and structure will
differ from person to person. Lessons may also include work on music
theory/aural skills/learning new music/sight singing/performance skills
depending on individual needs/preferences. Lessons for younger students often
involve music games and rhythm work using percussion instruments.
Q. What kind of songs will I be able to
sing?
Anne is happy
to work in a number of
styles/genres including classical/folk/pop/rock and musical theatre.
Students often
bring a song they like to the first session. Anne can
suggest
repertoire you may enjoy and will set study songs/exercises to help you
to
develop
your skills. More experienced singers will already have repertoire and
may wish to troubleshoot specific areas, develop interpretative skills
or learn to sing
in other styles.
Q. At
what age can children start ?
Anne teaches
young people from the age of eight, depending on an initial
consultation/audition: Since every child is different it is not
possible to say that all eight
year olds will be ready for one to one lessons. The lessons at
this age are all about enjoying singing with appropriate,
healthy voice while building good musical foundations. When the time
comes Anne is
able to guide young people through the voice changes of adolescence.
From 16 onwards training can become a little more rigorous, but
young voices are still vulnerable at this stage. Repertoire and
exercises are carefully chosen for the developing voice. A range
of music is used from classical to musical theatre.
Q. Can
parents 'sit in' on lessons ?
Parents are welcome
to sit in on the initial lesson as this can help a young student to
settle. It also gives Anne a chance to chat to them and explain
how the lessons work. After this it is usually better to leave the
child and teacher to get on with the lesson alone. There is a waiting
room where parents may wait if they wish.
